A handlap is a tool used in metalworking and woodworking for precisely shaping and smoothing surfaces. It consists of a flat surface, often made of metal, wood, or a composite material, to which an abrasive material like sandpaper or emery cloth is attached. The abrasive side is then rubbed against the workpiece to remove material and achieve a desired finish.

Handlaps are particularly useful for tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy, such as lapping mating surfaces, creating sharp edges, or ensuring a perfectly flat finish. The user applies pressure to the lap and moves it back and forth or in a circular motion over the surface to be worked. The controlled application of pressure and the consistent abrasive action allow for fine adjustments and the removal of minute imperfections. Different grits of abrasive can be used on a handlap to progress from coarse material removal to a very fine polish. They are an economical and effective alternative to more complex machinery for certain precision tasks.
