A handlap is a tool used in metalworking and woodworking for precisely shaping and smoothing surfaces. It consists of a flat surface, often made of metal, wood, or a composite material, to which an abrasive material like sandpaper or emery cloth is attached. The abrasive side is then rubbed against the workpiece to remove material and achieve a desired finish.
Handlaps are particularly useful for tasks requiring a high degree of accuracy, such as lapping mating surfaces,
