Halspulsådrorna, also known as carotid arteries, are major blood vessels in the neck that supply oxygenated blood to the head and brain. There are two main carotid arteries, one on each side of the neck. These arteries branch off from the aorta, the largest artery in the body, originating from the heart.

The common carotid artery ascends the neck and then divides into two branches: the external carotid artery and the internal carotid artery. The external carotid artery supplies blood to the face, scalp, and neck. The internal carotid artery, on the other hand, enters the skull and is the primary source of blood for the brain. It further divides into branches that nourish different regions of the brain, ensuring its vital functions.

The carotid arteries are crucial for maintaining brain health and function. Blockages or narrowing of these arteries, often due to atherosclerosis (plaque buildup), can significantly increase the risk of stroke. A stroke occurs when blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, depriving brain tissue of oxygen and nutrients. Regular medical check-ups, including monitoring blood pressure and cholesterol levels, are important for maintaining the health of the halspulsådrorna.
