Halmazelmélethez is the Hungarian term for set theory. Set theory is a branch of mathematical logic that studies sets, which are collections of objects. The theory was pioneered by Georg Cantor in the late 19th century. It provides a foundational framework for much of modern mathematics.

Basic concepts in set theory include elements, sets, subsets, unions, intersections, and complements. Elements are the individual items within a set, and a set is defined by the elements it contains. A subset is a set whose elements are all contained within another set. The union of two sets combines all elements from both sets, while the intersection contains only elements present in both. The complement of a set consists of all elements not in that set, within a larger universal set.

Set theory has proven to be a powerful tool for formalizing mathematical reasoning. It is used to define concepts such as numbers, functions, and relations. Despite its foundational role, set theory also presents paradoxes, such as Russell's paradox, which have led to the development of different axiomatic systems, like Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory (ZF) and its extension with the axiom of choice (ZFC). These axioms aim to avoid contradictions and provide a consistent basis for mathematical operations.
