Hajutusest is the Estonian term used to describe the phenomenon and study of dispersion or diffusion, the process by which something spreads away from a source. The concept is used across physical, biological, environmental, and social sciences to explain how substances, organisms, or information become more widely distributed over time.

In physical contexts, hajutus includes diffusion, where particles move from regions of higher concentration to lower concentration, typically described by Fick's laws. It also covers advection, where transport occurs due to bulk movement of a medium such as air or water, and turbulent mixing, which enhances spread. In biology and ecology, dispersal refers to movement of organisms or the spread of seeds and propagules, shaping population dynamics, gene flow, and species distributions. In public health and sociology, hajutus describes how pathogens, ideas, or cultural practices propagate through populations.

Models and methods used to study hajutus range from mathematical equations to empirical kernels. The diffusion equation and the more general convection–diffusion or reaction–diffusion equations capture transport and interactions in space and time. In ecology, dispersal kernels describe the probability of movement distances, while landscape and network approaches assess connectivity and barriers to spread. Measurement methods include tracer releases, dye studies, isotopic labeling, mark–recapture, GPS or acoustic tracking, and environmental sampling.

Applications of understanding hajutus are broad. They inform environmental risk assessment, pollution control, conservation planning, invasive species management, agricultural practices, and public health strategies. Key challenges include accounting for variability in space and time, anisotropy in transport, and the role of human activities in altering natural dispersion patterns.
