Hajuaistinsolut, also known as olfactory receptor neurons, are specialized nerve cells that play a crucial role in the sense of smell. These cells are located in the olfactory epithelium, a region within the nasal cavity. Each olfactory receptor neuron possesses cilia, which are hair-like structures that extend into the mucous layer lining the nasal cavity. Embedded within the membranes of these cilia are odorant receptors, a diverse family of G protein-coupled receptors.

When an odorant molecule, which is a chemical compound that can be smelled, enters the nasal cavity, it dissolves in the mucus and binds to specific odorant receptors on the cilia of the olfactory receptor neurons. This binding event triggers a cascade of intracellular events that ultimately leads to the generation of an electrical signal, an action potential. This signal is then transmitted along the axon of the olfactory receptor neuron.

The axons of olfactory receptor neurons converge in a structure called the olfactory bulb, located at the base of the brain. Here, they synapse with other neurons, such as mitral cells and tufted cells, which then relay the olfactory information to various parts of the brain, including the olfactory cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus. These brain regions are responsible for processing the odor signal, interpreting it as a specific smell, and associating it with memories and emotions. The remarkable ability to detect thousands of different odors is attributed to the vast number of different types of odorant receptors expressed by olfactory receptor neurons, each capable of binding to a range of odorant molecules.
