This method leverages the principle that when water evaporates, it absorbs heat from its surroundings, thereby lowering the temperature of the air. The simplest form of haihdutusjäähdytys is seen in the cooling effect experienced when water evaporates from the skin. In a more engineered context, it is employed in devices like evaporative coolers or swamp coolers. These units typically consist of a fan that draws warm, dry air through a water-saturated pad. As the air passes through the wet pad, water evaporates, and the air is cooled. This cooled, humidified air is then released into the space to be cooled.

Haihdutusjäähdytys is particularly effective in arid climates where the humidity levels are low. In high humidity environments, the rate of evaporation is significantly reduced, making the process less efficient.
