Haematopoietisch is a German term relating to the formation of blood cellular components. It is derived from the Greek words "haima" meaning blood and "poiesis" meaning to make. In English, the equivalent term is hematopoiesis. This is a dynamic and complex process that occurs throughout an organism's life, ensuring a constant supply of mature blood cells.

In adult mammals, haematopoiesis primarily takes place in the red bone marrow. Here, multipotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) reside. These stem cells are capable of self-renewal and differentiation into all the various types of blood cells, including red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). The process is tightly regulated by a variety of growth factors and cytokines, which signal the HSCs to proliferate and mature along specific lineages.

The development of red blood cells is known as erythropoiesis, white blood cells as leukopoiesis, and platelets as thrombopoiesis. Each of these pathways involves a series of progressive maturation steps, where progenitor cells gradually acquire the specific characteristics of their final mature form. For example, developing red blood cells lose their nucleus and accumulate hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport.

During fetal development, haematopoiesis occurs in different locations before the bone marrow becomes the primary site. Initially, it begins in the yolk sac, then shifts to the fetal liver and spleen. Disruptions in haematopoiesis can lead to various blood disorders, such as anemia, leukemia, and thrombocytopenia, highlighting the critical importance of this physiological process for maintaining health.
