Hydrostatics, also known as fluid statics, is the branch of fluid mechanics that studies fluids at rest. It explores the principles governing the pressure exerted by liquids and gases at equilibrium, and the forces that result from this pressure. Key concepts in hydrostatics include Pascal's principle, which states that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to every portion of the fluid and the walls of the containing vessel, and Archimedes' principle, which describes the buoyant force exerted on a body immersed in a fluid.

The pressure in a fluid at rest is dependent on depth. This relationship is described by the hydrostatic pressure formula, P = ρgh, where P is the pressure, ρ is the density of the fluid, g is the acceleration due to gravity, and h is the depth. This means that the deeper one goes into a fluid, the greater the pressure. Hydrostatics is fundamental to understanding phenomena such as why ships float, the operation of hydraulic systems, and the behavior of atmospheric pressure.
