höyläkone

A höyläkone, often translated as a planer or thicknesser, is a woodworking machine used to smooth and flatten lumber. It achieves this by removing material with a rotating cutter head. The workpiece is fed through the machine, and the blades shave off a thin layer of wood, creating a smooth, consistent surface. Höyläkoneet are essential for achieving precise dimensions and a high-quality finish on wood.

There are two main types of höyläkone. A jointer, also known as an edge planer, is used to flatten one face and square one edge of a board. This is often the first step in processing rough lumber. A thicknesser, or surface planer, is then used to make the opposite face parallel to the first and to reduce the board to its final thickness. Some machines combine both functions in a single unit.

The cutter head typically consists of two or three helical blades that rotate at high speed. The depth of cut can be adjusted to remove varying amounts of material. Safety features are important, including guards to protect the operator from the rotating blades and dust collection systems to manage wood chips and dust.
