Hôtels-Dieu is a historic term used for charitable hospitals in French-speaking regions. The name, literally “hotels of God,” derives from the medieval idea of a religiously affiliated lodging for the poor and sick. These institutions emerged in the Middle Ages and were typically founded by bishops, monasteries, religious orders, or city authorities. They functioned as places to provide shelter, food, and medical care to travelers, the idle poor, and the sick, often combining practical healthcare with spiritual support.

Historically, Hôtel-Dieu were staffed by clergy and, over time, by lay brothers and nuns who cared for patients and managed the properties, endowments, and religious services associated with the hospital. They usually included wards for patients, kitchens, and chapels, and they relied on endowments, alms, and municipal funding. In major cities, Hôtel-Dieu sometimes served as the city’s main charitable hospital and played a central role in urban welfare.

From the 18th through the 19th centuries, reforms and the expansion of state-run health systems led to secularization, reorganization, or integration of Hôtel-Dieu into larger hospital networks. Today, the term is largely historical, though a number of hospitals retain the name Hôtel-Dieu as a link to their medieval origins or preserve the historic buildings as monuments. The concept remains significant as an early model of organized care for the poor and ill in Europe and beyond.
