Granulaatiovaihe refers to a crucial stage in wound healing. It is the second of four phases, following hemostasis and preceding the proliferative and maturation phases. During the granulaatiovaihe, the wound bed begins to fill with granulation tissue. This tissue is characterized by its reddish, granular appearance and is composed of new connective tissue and microscopic blood vessels.

The formation of granulation tissue is essential for filling the defect left by the wound. Fibroblasts migrate into the wound and produce collagen, which provides structural support. Capillaries sprout and grow into the wound, supplying oxygen and nutrients necessary for tissue regeneration and forming the characteristic granular appearance. Macrophages also play a significant role during this phase, clearing debris and bacteria from the wound, and releasing growth factors that stimulate fibroblast proliferation and collagen synthesis.

The granulaatiovaihe is indicative of a wound progressing towards healing. A healthy granulation tissue indicates a good blood supply and is typically moist and pink or red. Excessive granulation tissue, also known as proud flesh, can occur, which may protrude above the wound surface and hinder closure. The duration of the granulaatiovaihe varies depending on the size and depth of the wound, as well as the patient's overall health.
