Grammatikatõlkeõpetusest, also known as the Grammar-Translation Method, is a traditional language teaching approach. It emphasizes the study of grammar rules and vocabulary through translation from the target language into the native language and vice-versa. The primary goal of this method is to enable students to read and translate literature in the target language.

In this method, language is primarily seen as a system of grammatical rules. Little attention is paid to oral communication or pronunciation. Lessons typically involve presenting grammatical rules, followed by exercises that require students to memorize vocabulary and translate sentences and passages. Errors are seen as a sign of misunderstanding grammatical rules and are corrected by the teacher.

The teacher plays a central role, acting as the authority and source of knowledge. Students are expected to be passive recipients of information, memorizing rules and vocabulary. The focus is on the written form of the language, with little to no emphasis on developing listening or speaking skills. This method was widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly for teaching classical languages like Latin and Greek. While it has largely been supplanted by more communicative approaches, elements of it can still be found in some modern language classrooms.
