grímnismál

Grímnismál is one of the Poetic Edda poems, a collection of Old Norse heroic and mythological songs. It is found in the Icelandic manuscript Codex Regius. The poem describes the god Odin, disguised as the wanderer Grímnir, being tormented by King Geirröd. Geirröd's sons, Agnar and Geirröd, are made to pour water on Odin, who is bound between two fires. Odin, angered by this mistreatment, vows revenge.

The poem then shifts to Odin's perspective as he recounts his experiences and observations to Geirröd, who is unaware of the wanderer's true identity. Odin reveals his knowledge of the gods, cosmic geography, and various mythological beings. He describes the realms of the gods, the dwellings of various creatures, and the intricate workings of the cosmos. He also speaks of his own many names and the wisdom he has gained through his journeys.

King Geirröd, upon realizing the true nature of his guest, is filled with remorse and attempts to free Odin, but it is too late. Odin is ultimately rescued by his son, Agnar. Grímnismál is significant for its rich mythological content, providing insights into Norse cosmology, theology, and the relationships between the gods. It is a valuable source for understanding the worldview of the ancient Norse people.
