Glutationképzdéshez, meaning "for glutathione formation" in Hungarian, refers to the biological processes and precursors involved in the synthesis of glutathione within living organisms. Glutathione is a vital tripeptide composed of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It plays a crucial role in a multitude of cellular functions, including antioxidant defense, detoxification, immune system regulation, and the synthesis and repair of DNA.

The biosynthesis of glutathione primarily occurs in the cytoplasm of cells and is catalyzed by two enzymes. The first step, catalyzed by gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GCL), forms gamma-glutamylcysteine from glutamate and cysteine. This is often the rate-limiting step in glutathione synthesis. The second step, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase (GS), attaches glycine to gamma-glutamylcysteine, yielding glutathione.

Adequate intake of its constituent amino acids, particularly cysteine, is essential for efficient glutathione production. Cysteine availability can be a limiting factor, and its supply is influenced by dietary protein intake and the body's own synthesis capabilities.
