Glucagon and insulin are two critical hormones produced by the pancreas that play opposing roles in regulating blood glucose levels. They work together in a delicate balance to maintain homeostasis, ensuring the body has a steady supply of energy.

Insulin is secreted by the beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. Its primary function is to lower blood glucose levels. When blood glucose rises, such as after a meal, insulin is released. It facilitates the uptake of glucose from the bloodstream into cells, particularly liver, muscle, and fat cells, for use as energy or for storage as glycogen in the liver and muscles, or as fat in adipose tissue. Insulin also inhibits the liver from producing more glucose.

Glucagon is produced by the alpha cells of the islets of Langerhans. Its function is to raise blood glucose levels. When blood glucose levels fall too low, such as during fasting or prolonged exercise, glucagon is released. It stimulates the liver to break down stored glycogen into glucose (glycogenolysis) and release it into the bloodstream. Glucagon also promotes gluconeogenesis, the synthesis of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources like amino acids and glycerol.

The interplay between insulin and glucagon is essential for preventing both hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). Disruptions in the production or action of these hormones can lead to conditions like diabetes mellitus. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin, leading to high blood sugar. In type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to insulin's effects or doesn't produce enough insulin.
