Glaukóma kezelése or glaucoma management refers to the various strategies and medical interventions employed to control glaucoma, a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. The primary goal of glaucoma treatment is to prevent further vision loss by reducing intraocular pressure (IOP), which is a major risk factor for optic nerve damage.

The most common initial treatment for glaucoma is medication, typically in the form of eye drops. These medications work by either decreasing the production of aqueous humor, the fluid inside the eye, or by increasing its drainage. There are several classes of eye drops available, and the choice depends on the type and severity of glaucoma, as well as the patient's individual response and medical history. Patients are often instructed on the proper technique for administering eye drops to ensure effectiveness.

If eye drops are not sufficient to control IOP or are not tolerated, laser therapy may be considered. Different types of laser treatments exist for various forms of glaucoma, such as selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) for open-angle glaucoma or laser peripheral iridotomy (LPI) for angle-closure glaucoma. These procedures aim to improve the drainage of aqueous humor or create new pathways for fluid to exit the eye.

In cases where medication and laser therapy are insufficient, surgical interventions may be necessary. Glaucoma surgery involves creating a new drainage channel for the aqueous humor, thereby lowering IOP. Common surgical procedures include trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage device implantation. Newer surgical techniques, often referred to as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), are also available, offering less invasive options with potentially quicker recovery times.

Regular follow-up appointments with an ophthalmologist are crucial for monitoring IOP, assessing optic nerve health, and adjusting the treatment plan as needed. Early detection and consistent management are key to preserving vision in individuals with glaucoma.
