Glättebedingung refers to the hazardous road conditions that arise when a thin layer of ice or compacted snow forms on a surface, significantly reducing traction. This phenomenon is most common during winter months but can also occur in other seasons due to freezing rain or rapid temperature drops. The primary cause is moisture on the road surface coming into contact with temperatures at or below the freezing point of water (0 degrees Celsius or 32 degrees Fahrenheit).

There are several types of glättebedingung. Black ice, perhaps the most dangerous, is a transparent layer of ice that is difficult to see and forms when a small amount of water freezes on the pavement. Rime ice, often seen on elevated surfaces like bridges, forms when supercooled water droplets in fog freeze on contact. Compacted snow that has been driven over by vehicles can also become icy and slippery.

The reduced friction coefficient between tires and the road surface leads to a significant increase in stopping distances and makes steering and acceleration much more challenging. This can result in loss of vehicle control, skidding, and accidents. Drivers are advised to reduce their speed, increase following distances, and brake and accelerate gently when encountering glättebedingung. Road maintenance crews often use de-icing agents like salt or sand to mitigate these dangerous conditions.
