Geotropismiin, also known as gravitropism, is the growth response of a plant in relation to gravity. Plants use geotropism to orient themselves, ensuring their shoots grow upwards towards light and their roots grow downwards into the soil. This directional growth is crucial for survival, as it allows plants to access necessary resources like sunlight and water.

The primary mechanism behind geotropism involves a hormone called auxin. When a plant is placed on its side, gravity causes auxin to accumulate on the lower side of the stem and root. In the stem, higher concentrations of auxin promote cell elongation, leading to faster growth on the lower side. This differential growth causes the stem to bend upwards, exhibiting negative geotropism.

In contrast, the root's response to auxin is different. In roots, high concentrations of auxin inhibit cell elongation. Therefore, the lower side of the root, where auxin has accumulated, grows more slowly than the upper side. This slower growth on the lower side causes the root to bend downwards, demonstrating positive geotropism. Specialized cells called statocytes, containing dense organelles called statoliths, are thought to play a role in sensing gravity and triggering the redistribution of auxin. This fundamental plant behavior is essential for establishing the plant's physical architecture and facilitating its interaction with the environment.
