Generalentreprenader refers to a contracting approach in construction where a single general contractor is engaged to deliver a project. The general contractor coordinates and executes the works, typically by hiring and supervising subcontractors for specialised trades. The term is used in several Nordic countries, including Sweden, and is part of standard procurement models alongside totalentreprenad and delad entreprenad.

In a generalentreprenad, the client usually provides the project brief and retains responsibility for design, while the general contractor takes charge of construction. The contractor signs a principal agreement with the client and then procures and manages subcontractors to carry out the construction work. The contractor also handles planning, procurement, site management, quality assurance, safety, and compliance with applicable building regulations. The client pays the contractor a single price or a schedule of rates as defined in the contract.

Risk and allocation: the client gains a single point of contact and streamlined communication, but relies on the general contractor's performance for cost, schedule, and quality. The general contractor bears the risk of coordinating subcontractors and managing subcontract price fluctuations; changes to scope may lead to variations and adjustments in price and timeline. Liability for design and construction remains subject to the contract; terms define which party is responsible for design work and feasibility.

Compared with totalentreprenad, where the contractor also handles design development or takes on design risk, generalentreprenad leaves design responsibilities primarily with the client, while the contractor focuses on construction. It is distinct from delad entreprenad, where design and execution responsibilities are split among multiple entities.
