In German, the corresponding concept is gebraucht, with common noun phrases such as gebrauchte Güter or Gebrauchtwaren. The form Gebrauchten does not function as a standard standalone noun in ordinary usage and, if encountered, is likely a misinterpretation, a brand name, or a regional/marketing blend.

The concept broadly refers to goods that have been owned and used before being resold. This includes a wide range of categories, such as furniture, electronics, clothing, books, vehicles, and household items. Used goods markets exist in many forms, from charity thrift stores and flea markets to online platforms and classified ads. In Dutch-speaking areas, kringloopwinkels (thrift stores) and the term tweedehands are common, while international platforms like Marktplaats, eBay, and Facebook Marketplace facilitate local and cross-border trades.

Quality assessment and terms of sale vary by platform and item. Common practice uses condition ratings (for example, new, like new, very good, good, acceptable), photographs, and descriptions of wear, functionality, and provenance. Warranties and return policies are often more limited than for new items and should be reviewed before purchase.

Environmental and economic aspects are frequently cited in discussions of used goods. Reuse extends product lifetimes, reduces waste, lowers consumer costs, and supports circular economy principles, while buyers often balance price against reliability and post-purchase support.
