Gasvrachten refers to the transportation of natural gas in a liquefied form, known as liquefied natural gas or LNG. This process is crucial for transporting natural gas over long distances, particularly across oceans, where pipelines are not feasible. The primary method involves cooling natural gas to approximately -162 degrees Celsius (-260 degrees Fahrenheit), causing it to condense into a liquid. This liquefaction process reduces its volume significantly, making it more manageable for shipping.

Specialized vessels, known as LNG carriers, are used for this transportation. These ships are designed with heavily insulated tanks to maintain the extremely low temperatures required to keep the gas liquefied. Once the LNG reaches its destination, it is unloaded at regasification terminals. Here, the liquid is warmed, returning it to its gaseous state, so it can be fed into the existing natural gas distribution network.

The development of LNG shipping technology has enabled global trade in natural gas, allowing countries to access gas reserves from regions far from their consumption centers. This has become increasingly important for energy security and diversification. The process involves significant infrastructure at both the liquefaction and regasification points, including storage facilities and specialized loading and unloading equipment. Safety protocols are paramount throughout the entire LNG supply chain due to the cryogenic nature of the cargo and the flammability of natural gas.
