förgasarsystemet

Förgasarsystemet is a car exhaust system used in certain trucks and other heavy vehicles produced by Swedish manufacturer Scania, and later also by some other manufacturers. The system is designed to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted by a vehicle's exhaust gases by using a high pressure turbocharger to compress the fuel charge, resulting in a higher fuel combustion temperature.

The system, also known as turbocharging or compressor-ignited engine, combines a turbocharger with a rape-seed based ignition system. The high pressure air entering the cylinder charge the unburnt fuel charge more thoroughly, resulting in a greater combustion rate. The increased combustion rate causes a higher pressure inside the engine cylinders, which forces some of the combustion gasses to be expelled into the turbocharger, resulting in the turbo-charging process.

Förgasarsystemet first appeared on some European truck models, and it was primarily aimed at reducing levels of pollutants in large diesel engines used in heavy-duty applications, like long-haul trucking and mining operations. The technology reduced CO emission levels and also improved fuel efficiency in certain operating conditions.
