Färgframkallning refers to the process of developing photographic film, specifically color film. It's a multi-step chemical process that transforms the latent image captured on the film's emulsion into a visible and stable color photograph. This involves exposing the film to various chemical baths in a controlled sequence and at specific temperatures.

The initial stages typically involve developing the exposed silver halide crystals in the emulsion that have been struck by light. This forms a negative image where areas exposed to light appear dark and unexposed areas appear light. Following this, a color coupler is activated, which forms dyes that are complementary to the colors of light that exposed the film. For example, areas exposed to red light will produce cyan dye, green light will produce magenta dye, and blue light will produce yellow dye.

Subsequent steps involve bleaching out the silver image, leaving only the dye image. A fixer then removes any remaining unexposed silver halide crystals, making the image permanent and insensitive to further light exposure. Finally, the film is washed to remove residual chemicals. Different color film processes, like the C-41 process for consumer color negatives and the E-6 process for color transparencies, have slightly different chemical formulations and sequences but follow the same fundamental principles of color dye formation and silver removal.
