Fyrirbærafræði is a branch of philosophy that studies phenomena. It seeks to understand the essence of things as they appear to consciousness, rather than focusing on objective reality independent of experience. The term originates from the Greek words phainomenon (appearance) and logos (study).

The philosophical movement of phenomenology, most notably associated with Edmund Husserl, aims to describe and understand the structures of experience and consciousness. It emphasizes a return to the "things themselves," meaning the direct experience of phenomena without presupposing any theories or assumptions about their underlying causes or objective existence. Key methods include epoché, or bracketing, where one suspends judgment about the existence of the external world to focus solely on the content of conscious experience.

Phenomenology has had a significant influence on various fields beyond philosophy, including psychology, sociology, literary theory, and theology. It encourages a deep and detailed examination of how we perceive, understand, and relate to the world around us. Different schools of phenomenology exist, with variations in their methodologies and interpretations, but the core concern remains the exploration of lived experience.
