Fuusiovoiman refers to the generation of energy through nuclear fusion. This process mimics the way stars, like our Sun, produce light and heat by fusing atomic nuclei together. In a fusion reactor, light atomic nuclei, typically isotopes of hydrogen such as deuterium and tritium, are heated to extremely high temperatures and pressures. Under these conditions, the nuclei overcome their natural electrostatic repulsion and merge, forming a heavier nucleus, usually helium. This fusion reaction releases a significant amount of energy.

The primary challenge in achieving controlled fusion power is creating and maintaining these extreme conditions. Plasma, an ionized gas where electrons are stripped from atoms, is the state of matter required for fusion. Containing this superheated plasma, which can reach temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius, is a major engineering hurdle. Two main approaches are being pursued for plasma confinement: magnetic confinement, where strong magnetic fields are used to hold the plasma, and inertial confinement, where powerful lasers or ion beams rapidly compress and heat a fuel pellet.

Fusion power offers the potential for a clean, safe, and virtually inexhaustible energy source. The fuel, derived from water and lithium, is abundant. Fusion reactions produce no long-lived radioactive waste, and the process is inherently safe, as a runaway chain reaction is not possible. However, significant scientific and engineering challenges remain before fusion power can become a commercially viable energy option, including achieving sustained energy gain and developing materials that can withstand the harsh reactor environment. Numerous international research projects, such as ITER, are dedicated to advancing fusion technology.
