They are standardized messages used to communicate the status of an EDI transaction between trading partners. When one party sends an EDI document, such as an invoice or purchase order, the receiving party typically sends back a funktsioonisõnum to confirm that the document was received and processed.

There are several types of funktsioonisõnumid, each indicating a different outcome. The most common are the 997 functional acknowledgment (ANSI X12 standard) and the CONTRL functional acknowledgment (UN/EDIFACT standard). These messages inform the sender whether the received transaction set was syntactically correct and if it was accepted or rejected. For instance, a 997 can indicate that the interchange control structure was accepted, but the transaction set itself was rejected due to errors.

The primary purpose of funktsioonisõnumid is to provide confirmation and error reporting.
