A fuel rail, also known as a fuel rail assembly, is a component of an internal combustion engine’s fuel delivery system that distributes fuel to the engine’s injectors. It is a pressure-stable conduit or manifold connected to the fuel supply line and serves as a reservoir from which each injector draws fuel. The rail is typically mounted near the cylinder head or intake manifold and is made from materials such as aluminum, steel, or high-strength plastics to withstand heat and fuel exposure.

In modern engines, the fuel rail plays a critical role in supplying fuel at the correct pressure for efficient combustion. In gasoline direct injection and diesel common-rail systems, a high-pressure pump powers the rail to maintain a precise delivery pressure. Injectors open at commanded times to spray fuel from the rail into the combustion chamber or intake port. The rail may house sensors, such as a rail pressure sensor, and may include a pressure regulator or spill valve to regulate pressure. Some designs operate with a return-type circuit that dumps excess fuel back to the tank, while others use a returnless arrangement to minimize fuel losses.

Materials and construction vary by application, but rails are designed to resist corrosion and withstand high temperatures. They feature connections for the main supply line and for each injector, along with mounting provisions and sometimes a mounting bracket to the cylinder head.

Common concerns include fuel leaks at fittings, cracks in the rail body, injector malfunctions, and sensor or regulator failures.
