Frøåbning, a Danish term, refers to the process by which a seed germinates and the embryo emerges from its protective casing. This crucial stage in the plant life cycle is initiated by favorable environmental conditions, primarily moisture, warmth, and sometimes light, depending on the species.

When a seed encounters these optimal conditions, it absorbs water, a process known as imbibition. This hydration activates enzymes within the seed that break down stored food reserves, providing the energy and nutrients necessary for growth. The embryo, consisting of the radicle (embryonic root) and plumule (embryonic shoot), begins to develop.

Typically, the radicle is the first part of the embryo to emerge, anchoring the seedling in the soil and beginning to absorb water and minerals. Following the radicle's emergence, the plumule develops, pushing upwards towards the light to form the stem and leaves. The seed coat, which protected the embryo during its dormant phase, splits open to allow for this growth. The speed and success of frøåbning depend on a variety of factors, including seed viability, the specific requirements of the plant species, and the quality of the growing medium.
