Frekvenskodning, also known as frequency coding or frequency modulation (FM) in a broader sense, is a technique used in signal processing and communication to represent information by varying the frequency of a carrier wave. The information to be transmitted is encoded as changes in the frequency of this carrier signal. Higher frequencies might represent one value or state, while lower frequencies represent another. This is distinct from amplitude modulation (AM), where the amplitude of the carrier wave is varied.

In its simplest form, frekvenskodning can be used for binary data transmission. For instance, a high frequency could represent a digital '1', and a lower frequency could represent a digital '0'. More complex variations allow for the transmission of analog information, where the instantaneous frequency of the carrier wave is directly proportional to the amplitude of the modulating signal at that moment.

Frekvenskodning has applications in various fields. It is fundamental to FM radio broadcasting, allowing for a clearer signal with less susceptibility to static and interference compared to AM. It is also used in modem technologies for data transmission over telephone lines, in some forms of optical communication, and in certain biological systems for transmitting neural information.
