Frekvensförhållanden, or frequency ratios, are a fundamental concept in acoustics and music theory. They describe the mathematical relationship between two musical pitches. When two notes are played together and sound consonant, their frequencies are typically related by simple integer ratios. For example, an octave represents a frequency ratio of 2:1, meaning the higher note has twice the frequency of the lower note. A perfect fifth has a ratio of 3:2, and a perfect fourth has a ratio of 4:3.

These simple ratios are perceived as harmonious by the human ear due to the way the sound waves interact. When frequencies are in simple ratios, their overtones align more closely, leading to a smoother and more pleasing sound. Conversely, more complex frequency ratios tend to sound dissonant.
