A franquista is a person who supports Francisco Franco or adheres to the ideology and policies of Francoist Spain. The term can refer to individual supporters, factions within the regime, or more broadly to ideas associated with that period.

Francoist Spain refers to the regime led by Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975, following the Spanish Civil War. The state combined a one-party system with the Falange Española de las JONS as a core element and the broader Movimiento Nacional as the governing framework. The official ideology fused nationalist centralism, Catholic traditionalism, and anti-communism, with Franco designated as Caudillo, or leader. Political pluralism was suppressed, and opposition was often met with censorship, exile, and repression. The regime pursued a corporatist economic model and maintained tight control over regional identities, particularly in Catalonia and the Basque Country.

Franquista governance extended into social and cultural life, promoting state-sponsored religion, censorship, and propaganda to shape education, culture, and public morals. From the 1950s onward, the regime implemented limited modernization and liberalizing steps, but substantial political change did not occur until after Franco’s death in 1975. The subsequent transition to democracy, known as the Spanish transition, culminated in a constitutional framework that dismantled the single-party system and regional tensions, while addressing the regime’s legacy.

In contemporary usage, franquista describes individuals or ideologies aligned with Francoist principles, as well as elements of the regime’s historical memory. It can also refer to cultural or architectural styles associated with that period.
