Fotoproteção refers to the protection of the skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by the sun. This protection is crucial for preventing a range of adverse skin conditions, including sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. The primary mechanism of fotoproteção involves the use of sunscreens, which are topical products containing ingredients that absorb or reflect UV rays.

There are two main types of UV radiation that affect the skin: UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and contribute to aging and long-term damage. UVB rays are more responsible for sunburn and play a significant role in the development of skin cancer. Effective fotoproteção should offer broad-spectrum protection, shielding against both UVA and UVB radiation.

The efficacy of a sunscreen is indicated by its Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which primarily measures the level of protection against UVB rays. A higher SPF value signifies greater protection. Beyond sunscreens, other methods of fotoproteção include wearing protective clothing, such as hats and long-sleeved shirts, seeking shade, and avoiding peak sun hours, typically between 10 AM and 4 PM. Consistent application of these measures is essential for maintaining skin health and reducing the risk of sun-related damage.
