Governance and ethics frameworks aim to curb undue influence. Transparency regimes such as lobbying registers and disclosure of political contributions, along with conflict-of-interest rules for public officials, help illuminate activity. Critics warn of regulatory capture when regulators become sympathetic to the industries they oversee.

Impact depends on context. When based on specialized knowledge and open dialogue, business input can improve policy design and market functioning. However, excessive or opaque influence risks privileging incumbents, reducing policy competition, and eroding public trust.
