Fornyrðislag is an ancient Germanic meter used in Old Norse poetry. It is characterized by its alliterative structure and a specific number of stressed syllables per line. Each line typically contains two stressed syllables in the first half, followed by a stressed syllable in the second half. Alliteration links the stressed syllables, with the first stressed syllable of the second half acting as the alliterating word for the second half of the line, and at least one of the stressed syllables in the first half also alliterating.
