It is also classified as a known human carcinogen by several health organizations, with links to nasal and nasopharyngeal cancer. Due to its health risks, many countries have regulations in place to limit formaldehyde exposure in workplaces and consumer products. In the environment, formaldehyde is produced naturally through the oxidation of methane and other organic compounds. It is also a component of cigarette smoke.
