folsom

Folsom is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States, located northeast of downtown Sacramento on the north bank of the American River and within the Sacramento metropolitan area. The city is known for a mix of historic sites and outdoor recreation and serves as a regional residential and commercial center.

The area that became Folsom developed in the mid-19th century during the California Gold Rush and with the arrival of the railroad. Notable landmarksin Folsom include Folsom Prison, established in the 1880s, which is one of the oldest prisons still operating in the state and gained international fame when Johnny Cash recorded a live album there in 1968. The Folsom Powerhouse, built to supply electricity to the region, is preserved as a historic site. Folsom Dam and the associated Folsom Lake on the American River provide water storage, flood control, and recreational opportunities for the region.

Today, Folsom combines historic neighborhoods with modern housing, shopping, and parks. It is served by the Folsom Cordova Unified School District and offers trails and parks as part of the American River Parkway system, making it a destination for outdoor activities in the Sacramento area.
