The objective of the game is simple: to propel a burning piece of straw from one person's mouth to another person's mouth, usually over a considerable distance.

The players form two teams, each consisting of several individuals. One team members take turns attempting to pass the burning straw, which is carefully maintained by the opposing team. The spot where the burning straw is placed on the mouth of the person about to receive it is usually greased with a piece of " sudaris", a type of Hungarian soft cheese.

Despite its simple nature, fokból is a test of stamina, endurance, and physical resistance for the participating individuals. The players must hold their breath and keep the burning straw in their mouth for as long as possible in order to pass it to their teammate, who receives it and starts the process over again. Players who fail to pass the straw are subject to various humiliating penalties. The team that successfully transfers the burning straw the greatest distance wins the game.
