Fluorowodor is the chemical compound with the formula HF. It is a colorless gas or liquid, depending on the temperature and pressure, and is a highly corrosive substance. Fluorowodor is produced industrially by the reaction of sulfuric acid with the mineral fluorspar, which is calcium fluoride (CaF2). The process involves heating fluorspar with concentrated sulfuric acid, producing hydrogen fluoride gas and calcium sulfate.

This gas is soluble in water, forming hydrofluoric acid. Hydrofluoric acid is a weak acid in terms of its dissociation in water, but it is extremely dangerous due to its ability to penetrate tissues and cause severe burns. The fluoride ion is highly reactive and can attack glass and other silicate materials. This property is utilized in etching glass, a process where designs are created on glass surfaces by selectively dissolving it.

Fluorowodor also finds applications in the production of various fluorine-containing compounds, including refrigerants, fluoropolymers like Teflon, and pharmaceuticals. In the nuclear industry, it is used in the enrichment of uranium. Due to its hazardous nature, handling fluorowodor requires specialized equipment and stringent safety precautions. Exposure can cause severe tissue damage, bone decalcification, and even be fatal.
