Fluoresenssivalaistus, often referred to as fluorescent lighting, is a type of electric light that utilizes fluorescence. It consists of a glass tube containing a mixture of gases, typically argon and mercury vapor, and a phosphorescent coating on the inside of the tube. When an electric current passes through the gas, it excites the mercury vapor, causing it to emit ultraviolet (UV) light. This invisible UV radiation then strikes the phosphorescent coating, which absorbs the UV light and re-emits it as visible light.

The color of the light produced by a fluorescent lamp depends on the specific phosphors used in the coating. Different phosphors emit light at different wavelengths, allowing for a range of color temperatures, from warm white to cool white and even daylight simulation. Fluorescent lighting is known for its energy efficiency compared to incandescent bulbs, consuming less electricity for the same amount of light output. This efficiency makes it a popular choice for general illumination in homes, offices, and public spaces. However, fluorescent lamps contain small amounts of mercury, which requires proper disposal to prevent environmental contamination. They can also produce a slight flicker, which some individuals may find noticeable.
