Fluorescent lighting is a type of electrical lighting that uses fluorescence to produce visible light. Inside a fluorescent lamp, an electric current excites mercury vapor. This excitation generates ultraviolet (UV) light, which is invisible to the human eye. The inside of the lamp tube is coated with a phosphor material. When the UV light strikes the phosphor coating, it causes the phosphor to glow and emit visible light. This process is known as fluorescence.

Fluorescent lamps are commonly found in homes, offices, schools, and other public spaces. They are known for their energy efficiency compared to incandescent bulbs, meaning they use less electricity to produce the same amount of light. This energy efficiency leads to lower electricity bills and a reduced carbon footprint. Fluorescent lights also have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs, requiring less frequent replacement.

There are several types of fluorescent lamps, including linear fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and fluorescent panels. CFLs, which became popular as energy-saving alternatives to incandescent bulbs, are designed to fit into standard screw-in sockets. While fluorescent lighting has many advantages, some older types contain small amounts of mercury, which requires careful disposal. Newer fluorescent technologies are working to minimize or eliminate mercury content. The color of the light produced by fluorescent lamps can vary, with options ranging from warm white to cool white, allowing for different aesthetic preferences and functional needs.
