Flotációt, often referred to as flotation, is a separation process that exploits differences in the hydrophobicity of surfaces. In essence, it's a method used to selectively separate hydrophobic particles from hydrophilic ones. The process typically involves introducing air bubbles into a liquid medium containing the material to be separated.

Hydrophobic particles, which repel water, tend to attach to these air bubbles. As the bubbles rise to the surface, they carry the hydrophobic particles with them, forming a froth or foam. This froth can then be collected and processed, leaving the hydrophilic particles behind in the liquid. The degree of hydrophobicity is often enhanced or modified through the use of specific chemical reagents called collectors or frothers, which adsorb onto the surface of the particles.

Flotation is widely used in various industries, most notably in mineral processing. It is a crucial technique for concentrating valuable minerals from crushed ore. By selectively attaching valuable minerals to air bubbles and collecting them as a concentrate, lower-grade ores can be economically processed. Beyond mining, flotation finds applications in wastewater treatment for removing suspended solids and oils, and in the paper industry for de-inking recycled paper. The efficiency of flotation depends on factors such as particle size, bubble size, reagent dosage, and flow rates.
