Fissioketjut, a term derived from Finnish, translates to "fission chains" or "chain reactions." In the context of nuclear physics, it refers to a self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction where the fission of an atom's nucleus releases neutrons that, in turn, cause the fission of other atomic nuclei. This process is fundamental to the operation of nuclear reactors and the detonation of nuclear weapons.

The process begins when a fissile material, such as uranium-235 or plutonium-239, is struck by a neutron. This impact causes the nucleus to split into two or more smaller nuclei, releasing a significant amount of energy and, crucially, several more neutrons. If, on average, at least one of these released neutrons goes on to induce fission in another fissile nucleus, the chain reaction can continue.

The rate at which a chain reaction proceeds is determined by factors like the type and quantity of fissile material, its physical arrangement, and the presence of neutron-moderating materials. In nuclear reactors, control rods are used to absorb excess neutrons, preventing the reaction from becoming uncontrolled and maintaining a steady rate of energy production. In nuclear weapons, the goal is to achieve a rapid, uncontrolled chain reaction, leading to a massive release of energy.
