Filyan is an ancient town in Armenia, located in the Tavush Province. The town has a long and storied history, with archaeological evidence suggesting human habitation dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. Filyan is situated in the historic province of Tauric Vaspurakan, which was once a major power in the region.

During the Bagratuni Kingdom in the 9th and 10th centuries, Filyan was an important center of Christianity. The town was a key location for the construction of the Kingdom's numerous churches, with a monastery built here in honor of Saint Gregory the Illuminator. The church was a significant cultural and spiritual hub in the region, attracting scholars and pilgrims from across Armenia.

In the 13th century, Filyan came under the control of the Zakarid dynasty. The later medieval periods saw Filyan experience periods of decline and abandonment, with many of the town's historical buildings being plundered or destroyed. Today, the site of Filyan is a small village, largely centred around the remains of the medieval cathedral of the Savior.

Archaeological excavations have revealed several layers of occupation at the site, including a castle built during the Pontic Kingdom. Filyan is considered an important cultural heritage site, reflecting the complex historical development of the region. The town's unique history has also led to increased preservation and restoration efforts in recent years, seeking to safeguard the remaining remains for future generations.
