Vaspurakan was a large kingdom and province in historic Armenia, located in the southeastern part of the Armenian Highlands. Its name is derived from the Armenian words "vasn" (for the sake of) and "pur" (surrender), implying a land that surrendered itself for a cause. The region encompassed a fertile and strategically important area, known for its numerous lakes, particularly Lake Van, which gave its name to the larger province of Taron, often mistakenly identified with Vaspurakan.
