Filtrácia is a Slovak term that translates to filtration in English. It refers to a process used to separate solids from liquids or gases by passing the mixture through a filter medium that allows the fluid to pass through but not the solid. This separation technique is fundamental in many scientific, industrial, and domestic applications.

The principle behind filtration is based on the physical properties of the components in the mixture. The filter medium, which can be made of various materials such as paper, cloth, sand, or specialized membranes, has pores of a specific size. When a mixture is forced or flows through this medium, particles larger than the pore size are retained, while the liquid or gas, along with any dissolved substances or smaller particles, passes through.

Filtration is employed in a wide range of contexts. In laboratories, it is used for purifying chemical solutions, removing precipitates, and sterilizing liquids. Industrially, it is crucial in manufacturing processes for producing beverages like beer and wine, purifying water for consumption, and separating valuable materials in mining and chemical production. Domestically, common examples include water filters, coffee makers, and air purifiers. The effectiveness of filtration depends on the type of filter used, the size of the particles to be removed, and the pressure applied.
