Filtrtyper, or filter types, describe how a filter affects the frequency content of a signal. They are used across fields such as electronics, telecommunications, audio processing, image processing, and control systems to remove unwanted components or to extract useful frequency bands.

A common way to classify filtrtyper is by their frequency response. Low-pass filters pass signals with frequencies below a cutoff and attenuate higher frequencies. High-pass filters do the opposite. Band-pass filters allow a specific frequency range to pass, while band-stop or notch filters attenuate a defined frequency band. There are also all-pass filters that pass all frequencies but modify the signal’s phase.

Filtrtyper can be implemented in analog or digital form. Analog filters use passive components (resistors, capacitors, inductors) or active components (op-amps) to shape the signal in real time. Digital filters operate on sampled data and are typically categorized as FIR (finite impulse response) or IIR (infinite impulse response); FIR filters can have linear phase, while IIR filters often achieve steeper attenuation with fewer resources but may introduce phase distortion.

Performance and design considerations include the desired cutoff frequency, attenuation in the stopband, ripple in the passband, and the transition width between passband and stopband. The filter order determines the steepness of the transition, and the choice between different response shapes (Butterworth, Chebyshev, Bessel, elliptic) reflects trade-offs between flatness, ripples, and phase characteristics.

Common applications include anti-aliasing and reconstruction filters in data conversion, audio equalization, communication channel shaping, and signal conditioning in measurement systems.
