filmigration

Filmigration is a blended term in film studies used to describe the study of migration as both subject and process within cinema. It refers to how migration experiences are depicted in films as well as how films themselves move across borders in production, distribution, and reception.

In its representational sense, filmigration encompasses diasporic, refugee, labor, and transnational narratives that explore migrant identities, belonging, border crossings, integration, and memory. It also covers stylistic and formal strategies filmmakers use to convey movement, transnational flows, and deterritorialization, such as multilingualism, archival footage, and montage.

In its industry sense, filmigration addresses the movement of film products across markets, including co-productions, financing, festival circuits, subtitling, dubbing, and platform distribution that shape which films reach which audiences. It also examines how policy, immigration regimes, and globalization influence film production and reception.

Scholarly work on filmigration often draws on transnational cinema, diaspora studies, and border studies, combining close textual analysis with industry data. Case studies may look at how immigrant communities are portrayed, how films form transnational identities, and how distribution networks affect access to migrant stories.
