Fiberforstærkere, also known as optical amplifiers, are devices used to boost the signal strength of light. They are crucial components in optical fiber communication systems, enabling signals to travel longer distances without significant degradation. Unlike electronic amplifiers that convert light to electrical signals, amplify them, and then convert them back to light, fiber amplifiers work directly with the light signal itself. This direct amplification process is more efficient and preserves the signal's integrity.

The most common type of fiber amplifier is the Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). EDFA's utilize a section of optical fiber doped with the rare-earth element erbium. When this doped fiber is pumped with light at a specific wavelength (typically around 980 nm or 1480 nm) from a laser diode, the erbium ions become excited. As the optical signal passes through the doped fiber, these excited erbium ions release their energy, emitting photons at the signal's wavelength and thus amplifying the signal.

Fiber amplifiers are characterized by their high gain, low noise figure, and wide bandwidth. They are widely deployed in telecommunication networks, including long-haul, metro, and access networks, as well as in undersea communication systems. Their ability to amplify optical signals directly in the optical domain without the need for optoelectronic conversion has revolutionized optical communication, allowing for higher data rates and extended transmission distances. Other types of fiber amplifiers exist, such as Raman amplifiers and Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs), each with their own unique characteristics and applications.
