Fenolbased, also written phenol-based, refers to substances or materials that are built around or derived from phenol, a hydroxyl-substituted aromatic compound. In industrial chemistry the term is commonly used for phenol-based resins and polymers, as well as other materials in which phenolic units constitute a major portion of the structure.

The most historically significant fenolbased polymers are phenol-formaldehyde resins, produced by condensation of phenol with formaldehyde. Two main families are novolaks (lower formaldehyde-to-phenol ratio, requiring a curing agent) and resols (excess formaldehyde, capable of self-curing). These resins form thermosetting networks upon curing and are valued for heat resistance and dimensional stability.

Applications include electrical insulation, flame-retardant laminates, molded parts, coatings, and adhesives. Fenolbased materials are prized where rigidity and heat resistance are important, though they can be brittle and moisture-sensitive if not properly formulated.

Safety and environmental considerations are important, as phenol itself is toxic and caustic, and formaldehyde is a potential irritant and carcinogen. Handling requires appropriate containment, ventilation, and personal protective equipment, and disposal must comply with hazardous-waste regulations. The environmental footprint of fenolbased products is influenced by raw-material sourcing, resin formulation, and curing processes, with ongoing research aimed at improving performance while reducing emissions and energy use.
