Felmekanismer, also known as muscle mechanisms, refer to the physical processes and structures that enable muscles to contract and relax, thereby producing movement. These mechanisms are fundamental to the functioning of the musculoskeletal system and are essential for various biological processes, including locomotion, posture, and the manipulation of objects.

Muscle contraction is initiated by the nervous system, which sends electrical signals to muscle fibers. These signals trigger the release of calcium ions from the sarcoplasmic reticulum, a specialized organelle within muscle cells. The calcium ions bind to troponin, a protein complex that regulates muscle contraction. This binding causes a conformational change in the troponin-tropomyosin complex, exposing the myosin-binding sites on actin filaments. Myosin heads then bind to actin, forming cross-bridges that generate force by pulling the actin filaments.

The sliding filament theory describes the process of muscle contraction. As cross-bridges form and release, the thin actin filaments slide past the thick myosin filaments, shortening the sarcomere and thereby the entire muscle fiber. This process is highly regulated and can be modulated by various factors, including the frequency and duration of neural stimulation, as well as the availability of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy source for muscle contraction.

Muscle relaxation occurs when the electrical signal from the nervous system stops, causing calcium ions to be pumped back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum. This reduces the concentration of calcium ions in the cytoplasm, leading to the detachment of cross-bridges and the return of the muscle to its resting length. This cyclic process of contraction and relaxation allows muscles to perform a wide range of movements and functions.
